What Hormone does the Hypothalamus produce?

Answer

The hypothalamus produces several important hormones, many of which control the pituitary gland.

The main hypothalamic hormones are:

  • TRH (thyrotropin-releasing hormone) : stimulates TSH release.

  • CRH (corticotropin-releasing hormone) : stimulates ACTH release.

  • GnRH (gonadotropin-releasing hormone) : stimulates LH and FSH release.

  • GHRH (growth hormone-releasing hormone) : stimulates growth hormone release.

  • Somatostatin (GHIH) :inhibits growth hormone release.

  • Dopamine (prolactin-inhibiting hormone) : inhibits prolactin release.

The hypothalamus also produces oxytocin and ADH (vasopressin). These are transported to and released from the posterior pituitary.
