What is the purpose of a heatsink?

Answer

The purpose of a heatsink is to absorb thermal energy. It dissipates this energy from components like CPUs(Central Processing Unit) or LEDs to prevent damage. A heatsink can increase surface area using metal fins to help enhance the cooling. Without proper contact when needing thermal paste a heatsink cannot be able to cool the component leading to damage of the component.
