What is the purpose of a router?

Routers can serve many purposes in information technology. It can connect to multiple networks such as LAN and WAN. A router can also direct data packets along the most efficient pathway. Routers enable data sharing, assign IP addresses and provide security. Many modern routers can combine functions of a router and a wireless access point to connect devices wirelessly. Lastly, routers can manage the flow of information to ensure data reaches the appropriate destination and supports both internet access and local resource sharing.
