What is the primary function of the nervous system?
Answer
The primary function of the nervous system is to receive information, process it, and coordinate the body’s response.
it does three main things:
-
Sensory Input
-
Detects changes (stimuli) inside and outside the body through sensory receptors.
-
Example: feeling heat, seeing light, hearing sounds.
-
-
Information Processing (Integration)
-
The brain and spinal cord analyze and interpret the sensory information.
-
-
Motor Output (Response)
-
Sends signals to muscles or glands to produce a response.
-
Example: pulling your hand away from a hot surface or increasing heart rate during exercise.
-
These functions are carried out by the two main parts of the nervous system:
-
Central Nervous System (CNS) – the brain and spinal cord that process information.
-
Peripheral Nervous System (PNS) – nerves that carry messages to and from the CNS.
