Here are a few simple steps to make assigned readings more manageable:

1. Preview the Material
Before diving into the reading, take a moment to preview the text. Skim the text first. Read the introduction, headings, and subheadings to grasp the structure and main ideas. Then, scan the text for keywords. Identify key terms, characters, or concepts that are central to the topic.

2. Annotate as You Read
Active engagement with the text can significantly improve comprehension. Consider taking notes as you read. Highlight or underline important points or arguments, but do so sparingly. Write notes in the margin or on sticky notes. Jot down questions, comments, or summaries in the to record your thoughts and help jog your memory later.

3. Break the Reading into Manageable Segments
Long or complex texts can be overwhelming. Breaking the reading into smaller, manageable chunks can enhance focus and retention. Set goals to determine how many pages or sections to read in one sitting and take breaks to reflect on what you've read. Pause and reflect after each segment to summarize what you have learned and how it connects to the overall argument or theme.

4. Develop a Vocabulary List
When reading college level texts, there may be words you don’t know or haven’t heard before. Don’t be afraid to look up words and their pronunciations while reading. Consider creating a vocabulary list. Identify new terms and write down unfamiliar words and phrases, along with their definitions. Contextualize the usage of new words and phrases by making notes on how these terms are used within the reading.

5. Practice Reflective Reading
After reading take a moment to reflect on what you’ve read and how it relates to your studies, your personal life, or the world at large. Ask questions about the text, such as the author's purpose, the intended audience, and the implications of the arguments presented. Make connections between the text and other materials or personal experiences to deepen your understanding.
