What is a packet in Information Technology?

Answer

A packet is a small unit of data that is carry's a piece of a large message. This message contains both data and control information for a reliable delivery across networks that includes the internet. The data is then broken into packets  in a process called packet switching that optimizes network use. These packets can travel independently and can use different routes for the data to be sent to the appropriate destination.
