  • Linezolid, a oxazolidinone, primarily affects Gram (+) bacteria including MRSA and VRE
  • Linezolid is particularly useful for complicated skin infections
  • They have little to no effect on Gram (-) or protozoal infections
  • Oxazolidinones inhibit by binding to 50 S ribosome
  • Side Effects:  myelosuppression if taken for more than 2 weeks; leads to decreased WBC count, decreased RBC count, and decreased platelets
  • Weekly CBCs are needed
  • Can interact with SSRIs with a drug like Sertaline; can lead to serotonin syndrome
  • Also a weak MAO inhibitor; avoid tyramine:  aged cheese, red wine, and cured meats
