What do you know about the antibiotic drug Class Oxazolidinones?
- Linezolid, a oxazolidinone, primarily affects Gram (+) bacteria including MRSA and VRE
- Linezolid is particularly useful for complicated skin infections
- They have little to no effect on Gram (-) or protozoal infections
- Oxazolidinones inhibit by binding to 50 S ribosome
- Side Effects: myelosuppression if taken for more than 2 weeks; leads to decreased WBC count, decreased RBC count, and decreased platelets
- Weekly CBCs are needed
- Can interact with SSRIs with a drug like Sertaline; can lead to serotonin syndrome
- Also a weak MAO inhibitor; avoid tyramine: aged cheese, red wine, and cured meats
