What is the point-slope formula?

Answer

The point slope formula is where you use this formula to make another line. This consists of using a slope from your first line and plugging it into an equation using the point slope formula and using an ordered pair to help you find the second equation. The point slope formula consists of Y-Y1=m(x-x1). Lets break down the formula.

Y-Y1=m(x-x1)

First lets look and X1 and Y1 say we are given (4,3) as our ordered pair. By looking at it we know that X is first and Y is our second so in this case X1 is 4 and Y1 is 3 and from there we substitute those numbers in our respected places. Now if we have our first equation Y=1/2x+3 we have to remember our slope formula Y=mx+b where m is our slope and b is our Y-int. From there we can come to the conclusion that M=1/2 and we can finish our substitution.

So now our equation is Y-3=1/2(x-4) and now we solve the equation.

First we distribute so we have 1/2x-2

then we add 3 on both sides to get Y by itself

so our solution is Y=1/2x-2 for our second equation to graph with our first equation.
