What is Respiration
Answer
Respiration is the process of exchanging oxygen and carbon dioxide between the atmosphere and body cells. The action of breathing is is carried out by the lungs by taking in oxygen and releasing carbon dioxide. The diaphragm and the rib muscles contract and relax to facilitate breathing. The respiratory system consist of passages that filter, moisten, and warm incoming air and transport it into the body, into the lungs, and the air sacs (alveoli) where gas exchange takes place.
The respiratory system includes:
- The nose
- Mouth
- Nasal cavity
- Sinuses
- Pharynx
- Trachea
- Bronchial tree
- And Lungs
These organs facilitate the delivery of oxygen to cells of the body for use in cellular respiration, (a process by which cells derive energy from glucose).
